Our intention is to foster the creative community spirit in Durham. Monkey Bottom may be used for any of the Forces of Good: classes, art exhibits, music, video, dance, parties - ongoing or singular.

The name comes from an area located about a mile from here that was once one of the bottom dwelling areas around the bustling mills of Durham. The story is that one day some monkeys escaped from what was then the nearby Erwin Auditorium. Supposedly the monkeys were never recovered.

The Auditorium and the mills are gone and the Durham Freeway paved its way through the old Monkey Bottom neighborhood. But what of the monkeys?
